"This is fantastic--it's far nicer than I had expected. The scenery is outstanding, the cities are pleasant, sort of European, and the people are very polite, very friendly." This comment by Jane Northcutt of Brook Highland, Alabama, a veteran of several cruises, is typical of Americans who have been on European, Caribbean, and Alaskan cruises and are discovering cruises around the south of South America.
Northcutt said she expected something more like Mexico or the Caribbean, where shore visits are often a madhouse of pestering from pushy peddlers. "Going ashore in Chile, Uruguay, and Argentina is a totally different experience," she said. "They welcome you warmly, but they don't bother you."
Her friend, Fay Fourman, also of Brook Highland, said, "I feel very safe down here." Wowed ...
. . .
...Time zone.
U.S. citizens do not need a visa for any of the stops on this cruise, only a passport, but Chile imposes a $100 reciprocity fee on Americans entering that country by air, which means that if someone opts for the Santiago--Buenos Aires route rather than vice versa it cost $100 extra. Many South American airports also impose departure taxes.
