A skier feels a certain giddiness just before launching down a steep virgin slope. At these times his mouth goes dry as sand, his mind searches frantically for a way out, and his heart feels as if it's about to bust out of the corral and break into a thundering gallop.
I have that feeling now, peering over the lip of a snowy crest, gazing down, down, down into the depths of Yeakel Bowl, a treeless, north-facing basin high in the Colorado Rockies. And yet the bowl, filled to the rim with some of the coldest, driest, fluffiest powder snow I have seen, is powerfully alluring.
Poised at the edge of safety between flat-footed terra firma and wingless free fall, knowing that in a few seconds I will no longer be standing here but will be speeding down this sharply angled plane, questions ra...

...watch, I feel a powerful bond with these skiers here with me today and with the ski troopers of a previous generation. Remembering them, I think about what those men of the Tenth lived for, and I feel we are kindred spirits:
"Skiing is not a sport," they said. "Skiing is a way of life."I turn and continue my descent, following the tracks those young hotshots laid down some fifty years ago.
