In Omar Stupac's small living room, there hangs a photograph of the "old bridge." It is a faded black-and-white picture, torn, and surrounded by a modest wooden frame. It is Stupac's most valuable possession--the only thing the forty-three-year-old Bosnian owns from Mostar, his hometown, which he fled two years ago.
The bridge, which never had an official name, was built by the Turks in 1540 across the beautiful Neretva River. Memories flood Stupac. He recalls jumping off the bridge to cool off on hot July afternoons and the days he went fishing with his father. The only thing that remains of this bridge is the memories it recalls. It has become a victim of the region's deadly strife, which has claimed nearly fifteen hundred lives in Mostar alone.

...en you or I," she continues. "Some people would just roll over and die if their homes were taken away from them. The ones who are here had the strength to survive. They are people who have much to offer. We have a responsibility to those coming to our country seeking a haven from persecution. We failed to respond adequately to people fleeing Nazi Germany. We should never fail refugees again."
