There on the top of Mount Nebo, I stood where it is believed Moses stood, looking with longing over that vast land, promised--yet denied. Feelings of wonder welled up within me as my eyes swept across those distant desert lands--the Promised Land--Canaan of old. It was the high point of my pilgrimage through Jordan to places held holy by over half the world's population--those who are of the three largest monotheistic religions of the world: Islam, Christianity, and Judaism.

The air was cool on Mount Nebo, pleasant with the scent of desert flowers and evergreens growing near its summit. I listened as my guide explained, "Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist on this Jordanian [east] side of the Jordan River."
