Iknew the beaten path had ended when the vehicle I was traveling in began negotiating the largest collection of pre-Columbian potholes anywhere in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. The potholes were filled with water, from a recent rain, and fine limestone silt leached from the surrounding earth. The road had begun getting narrower two hours before, as the jungle vegetation--dense, green, and impenetrable--threatened what little track there was. I was halfway between the tourist hive called Cancn and the biosphere reserve known as Sian Ka'an. Traveling down that road, I felt I was a world away from anywhere. Actually, that is one of the charms of entering Sian Ka'an--a name used as early as a.d. 500--which means "where the sky is born."

...ed. My compadres and I laughed and joked as we merrily, merrily made our way downstream.
A Mexican mile, we learned, is as long as a Mexican feels it should be. Soon we were back on board and tearing down the channel. A flock of pelicans kept an eye on us as we sped back across the lagoon. The only obstacle that now stood between us and civilization was the potholed road. Ah, the potholes.
