As the expectant crowd settled into the cold metal folding chairs at the Wright Brothers National Memorial near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, a band played "Oh Come, All Ye Faithful"--an appropriate choice, for it was December 17, 2002, just a week before Christmas. It was also fitting because an estimated five to six thousand faithful followers of flight were there to pay homage to mechanical geniuses Orville and Wilbur Wright, kicking off a yearlong celebration of the hundreth anniversary of the first flight on December 17, 1903. The top celebrity present was Gen. Ralph Eberhart, commander in chief of the U.S. Space Command, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, and the newly created U.S. Northern Command.
