Willie Mays Deserves to be Celebrated

Willie Mays played 15 of his 22 major league seasons in San Francisco. But it was in New York, where he began his career in 1951 and ended it in 1973, where he became a national icon and part of the lore of the game. The Giants moved from New York to San Francisco in 1958, and while the city recognized its treasure it remained a love affair without intimacy. The fans didn't connect with Mays like they did with the stars who arrived shortly after the team moved -- players like Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal and Orlando Cepeda.

...t the emcee for the Hunter's Point event said that when she asked a young man what he knew about Willie Mays, the youth replied: "He's Barry Bonds' godfather."

There is no such innocent enthusiasm in Hagerstown. There, Willie Mays has come to symbolize division in a town that tried to come to grips with part of its past and committed an error.
