After all, in a time of a crumbling regime and centuries-old empire, a time that historians are sure to interpret and reinterpret for generations to come, Lebed's military and political career is similar to that of many other officers and ordinary citizens of the former Soviet Union. Lebed seemingly belongs to the last Soviet generation, that is, those who reached their prime during the Soviet regime. He is 48 and has already enjoyed a long career in the army. He spent several years involved in the Afghan war and might have been destined for obscurity like most other fellow veterans, but he was lucky enough to be in Moscow during those fateful days of August 1991, when both the regime and the empire crumbled. Lebed also might not well succeed, but at the present moment he is possibly the only person who might drag Russia out of the pit after a decade of "reforms." Whether the Weltgeist would be benevolent to him and the country remains to be seen.
