I was driving about 35 miles per hour when, out of the corner of my right eye, I saw a shiny reflection coming directly toward my chest. I grabbed for the forearm and stopped the blade just inches away. My other hand grasped the steering wheel, barely keeping the car from going into a ravine, while my right foot hit the brake.
Wendy and I had met ten years earlier, near the end of my medical residency, and there were times that I thought it had been a match made in heaven. David, our second child, had just arrived when the first signs of Wendy's illness appeared. Our eldest, Kim, was just over three, and the four of us seemed to be the perfect family. Kim was fantastic, and I expected little less from David. I was an eye surgeon and Wendy a speech pathologist. We were, I thought,...

...aw must generously and require them to act in the best interests of minor children but also protect those patients and loved ones around them from the ravages of this disease. The police need to understand more about bipolar disorder and its many faces; social service networks that interface with these people also should act in a more inspired and proactive fashion in their dealings with them.
