The following article was first delivered as an address at a conference titled "Beyond Coexistence Toward a New Culture of Peace: Focus on the Middle East," which was held February 27-March 2, 2003, in Washington, D.C. It was later published in the book Middle East Peace Initiative (IIFWP, 2003).
One of the qualities that colonial powers are rather short on is the religious virtue of humility. But all the more reason for it to be attended to, I would argue, at a time of international crisis.
