Given such startling predictions, there has been considerable discussion about creating successful means to contain and reduce Americans' health-care expenditures. One of the most logical and cost-effective suggestions is to try to decrease ''risky'' or, in essence, unhealthy behaviors. Indeed, the American Medical Association recently observed that ''much of the growth in health care expenditures can be traced to lifestyle factors and social problems.'' Not surprisingly, clinical attention has focused more and more on identifying those life-style factors that have a positive impact on health. However, lost in the many ongoing discussions about eating correctly, sleeping adequately, exercising, and stopping smoking has been one prevalent life-style factor with wide-ranging, health-enhancin...

The ''R'' word, religion, seems to frighten many medical professionals and evoke strong responses from those who wish to keep religion confined to a church, synagogue, or mosque. God help us if it becomes more public! It is time to end the ''religious quarantine'' and allow patients and practitioners the freedom to address religious issues in health care.
