Sen. Mark Hatfield (R-Oregon), writing in 1982, described the church's role as follows:
"For Christ, the problems of injustice and the lack of social righteousness were at the very heart of the problem. The values upon which the existing institutions and political movements were based were the desire for power and domination, the quest for money, and the lure of prestige and recognition. The kingdom of Christ, on the other hand, proclaimed a new life based not on the values of selfishness but on a radical selflessness. The false values of money, glory and power are to be forsaken. Instead of hoarding, there is to be sharing. Instead of ambition and glory, humility is to reign. Instead of power and domination, there is to be voluntary service."
Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-New York) wrote ...
. . .
...rce the child support laws now on the books so that absent fathers take responsibility for their children.
These public policy changes, combined with the short-term assistance and ongoing pastoral care given to the welfare population through the churches, would make it likely that the great majority of welfare recipients could leave public assistance for a life of independence and dignity.
