One of South Africa’s most successful conservation efforts, Addo Elephant National Park has earned international acclaim for creating the country’s largest elephant sanctuary.

The bull elephant has spotted us and a hush has fallen over the open-air Land Rover. We watch him watch us. Careful to move slowly, I raise my camera and photograph the giant mammal while holding my breath. His enormous ears flap forward as he calmly studies the six humans gaping at him from the vehicle a few yards away. I’ve visited many animal parks in the United States over the years--but I never would have guessed that being nose to trunk with an animal I’d observed captive would be so awe-inspiring.
