The year was 1985. My work on board a scientific research ship had brought me to Dutch Harbor, Alaska, a tiny port midway out on the Aleutian Island chain. The place was barren, cold, and hard, whipped by ocean winds and lined with treeless cliffs that jutted straight up from the sea. There was nothing about the place that might entice a person to stand outside for any length of time, save one feature: the bald eagles that made their home there.
There were 35 men and women aboard that ship. We came from different parts of the world and represented a variety of cultures, tastes, ages, and levels of education. The one attribute we seemed to share was the awe we felt watching those magnificent birds. They soared above the island majestically, circling, swooping, cawing, seemingly imperviou...

...sed not only survived but mated and raised their young. At long last, a government program that seems to work!
It is indeed heartening to see the rebound of this magnificent bird and American treasure. In "Rocky Mountain High," John Denver sang of someone who "knew he'd be a poorer man if he never saw an eagle fly." As I watched those bald eagles over Dutch Harbor, I had to agree with him.
