Over the last four summers, I’ve spent numerous days in the field chasing butterflies, wildlife camera in hand, with noted Great Plains butterfly expert, Professor Ronald A. Royer of Minot State University, North Dakota. My purpose was to capture on film as many local representatives of butterfly fauna as possible for his upcoming book, Butterflies of North Dakota, a comprehensive guide to the state’s 150 or so species. Once that work was completed in 2003, we continued with the idea of publishing another, even more colorful “coffee table” book that would be fully illustrated with my in-nature photographs. ...history museum curators, or just planting extra nectar and larval food plant sources in your garden all add up to help our native butterflies. I honestly believe without quick intervention on our part, many species of butterflies will not be around for the next generation to enjoy. I can’t imagine my grandchildren in a world without free-flying beautiful butterflies to take pleasure in. Can you?
