"Standing on the shore of a northern estuary in the summer can be a truly amazing experience," says David St. Aubin, an expert on beluga whales at the Mystic Marinelife Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut. "As many as 1,500 to 2,000 beluga whales can be congregated in a fairly restricted area, and the variety of sounds they make just fills the air. There's a reason they're nicknamed 'canaries of the sea.' "
Indeed! The ability of belugas to make and even imitate a variety of sounds has captivated many an imagination. But for all the time we've spent hunting this animal, observing it from shore and studying it in captivity, it is only now that we're discovering remarkable new information about its talents and behavior.

A lot of aquariums have belugas--we have them here at Mystic--and the experience we've gained through daily contact reinforces our work in the wild. And what we learn from them in the wild we bring back to our programs here. So it's a mutually beneficial approach to beluga conservation, which is the main objective."
