...ainage water is discharged into a receiving stream, which in the eastern United States is often slightly acidic, the receiving water can acidify any metals remaining in the discharge, releasing them as free and again-toxic ions. A second problem occurs because some of the sludge may flow out from the discharge pipe. Sludge dredged from the ponds is often pumped back into the mines.
