When asked to name the highlight of his half-century-long career, Koji Nakanishi, Centennial Professor of Chemistry at Columbia University, natural-products chemist, and author, doesn't mention the almost 700 papers and nine books he's published or the dozens of awards or honorary degrees. What immediately comes to mind is the surprise celebration his colleagues held in honor of his 70th birthday in 1995. More than 200 chemists from at least a dozen countries gathered at Columbia for a weekend of activities ranging from banquets to lectures to magic.
"My colleagues and friends really went out of their way and did many nice things for me," Nakanishi recalls. "I feel the warm feelings of all of the people who have gone out of my labs." With his nondescript clothes, medium height, thinning...
