A restless snail kite deep in the Amazon feels the cool fall temperatures of May and sets off into the sky. Joining thousands of others, it starts its migration to the world's largest wetland: the Pantanal.
Located in the heart of South America, the Pantanal is an ever-changing celebration of life. Covering roughly 55,000 square miles (140,000 square kilometers), most of this biome is in Brazil, with some in Bolivia and Paraguay and a corridor extending down to Argentina. Although not as species rich as the Amazon basin, the region accommodates more than 150 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, 250 species of fish, and 25 reptile species. ...ve adapted to the floods, and many move to higher areas of the Pantanal. Termites crowd into the upper, dry sections of their tall, conelike nests and wait for the waters to recede. By the beginning of April, the flooding reaches its peak. Then, as water levels begin to drop, our snail kite deep in the Amazon starts to feel the cooler temperatures and will soon return. The cycle begins again.
