On August 21, 1999, at the World Center for Birds of Prey in Boise, Idaho, Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt announced to a packed house of scientists, government officials, and wildlife enthusiasts that the 30-year effort to restore wild peregrine falcon populations in North America was a success. This magnificent bird could at long last be removed from the list of endangered species on which it had been placed nearly three decades ago. "Every American should be proud," said Babbitt, noting that over 6,000 captive-bred peregrines had been released to restore a wild population that had been decimated by pesticide poisoning.
With this recovery, peregrine falcons once again take center stage as one of the few vertebrates with a virtually global distribution. At home in some of the wildest ...
