Back in the sixties, an ad (by now tame) for an adult movie portentously stated, "It is said that sin can be forgiven seven times seventy times. This is the 491st!"
Soon many homes will have the capacity for some five hundred TV channels. One wonders: Is this a sign of millennial doom, or salvation? You may have to rezone your living room as a multiplex!
There is too much TV--filling our lives, our airwaves, even our unconscious. It would be easy enough to dismiss TV entirely, but for the fact that sixty-plus channels has actually meant some good things on cable networks such as A&E, the History Channel, and AMC (American Movie Classics). The problem is that sixty channels has meant more of everything--more quality and more nonsense.

... joke is making the rounds on (where else?) the Internet: Colombian coffee icon Juan Valdes, the always-tidy-looking peasant with the mule in tow, walks into a Starbucks in search of a good hot cup of coffee. On the menu he sees latte, mocha, cappuccino, espresso, decaf mocha, decaf cappuccino, decaf espresso, espresso cappuccino, and other complex coffee concoctions. What does he order? Tea.
