No longer content to focus just on celebrity glitz, Italian photographers are now stylishly elevating their art while giving deeper insight into their indomitable culture.
Although Italian artists working in other media such as sculpture and painting are steeped in history, no one clearly understands where to place photographers in Italian culture. The term immagini italiane (Italian images) evokes impressions of timeless sculptures, austere palazzi, classical paintings, and Byronic landscapes. It conjures up a world in which artists play a specific social role, one that has been reinforced by centuries of tradition. It does not suggest the technical and highly reproductive qualities that characterize photography.
