View of the Atlas Mountains
Clouds as light as olive wreaths,
lighter than mist and air and wind,
and the silver edge of their leaves
flow smoother still than gentlest wine.
Atlas sleeps, the mammoth sleeps,
and in the grove the morning stirs
the supple dark, where pounding feet
have dashed the waking earth with fire.
There those...
. . .
...miled from the roots of the world
then into the night in our hears?
Now the smile in under those lashes
and the shimmering laughter go dim,
and this gaze out of infinite ages
descends with its glitter of pain.
Let the heart like a vanishing bird
come whisper once more to be still,
let the world we desire go to ruin,
Claude will be smiling that smile.
