Visiting the Netherlands in 1873, Irish historian W.E.H. Lecky compared the Dutch country houses with those in England: "The houses struck me as a more human institution, much better both for the owners and for the Country than most English ones, being a smaller scale, without the vast lawns and parks.… They have a great deal of finished and concentrated beauty, magnificent trees, beautiful lakes, extremely fine gardens and hothouses; sometimes very fine pictures; and there is a wonderful air of comfort about it all."

Through the work of the foundation, concerts and receptions are once again held in Duivenvoorde’s lavishly appointed Marot Hall. “After almost eight centuries,” says the Baroness, her eyes drifting over the portraits of generations of van Wassenaers, “they remain very much a part of the lifeblood of Duivenvoorde.”
