Americans are used to regular visits from European Orchestras which almost always delight and awe audiences. When the Vienna Symphony Orchestra conducted by Wolfgang Sawallisch, and the Munich Philharmonic under the baton of Lorin Maazel, played in Washington and New York this fall, audiences were not disappointed.

...ainstaking and detailed direction. He was able to gracefully balance the strings and brass, and the darker registers of the Hindemith came from the orchestra like second nature.
It is hoped that European orchestras will visit more often, if the performances of the Vienna Symphony and Munich Philharmonic are any indication of the level of musicianship of these "lesser" known ensembles.
