For some time Craig Dykers has been on an architectural quest, and that journey is now bearing fruit in the form of a remarkable structure--the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, grand successor to the long-lost ancient library of Alexandria, Egypt. It represents a career pinnacle for not only Dykers but his firm, Snohetta Architects of Oslo, Norway.
The genesis of Dykers' involvement in this monumental project can be traced to his decision to contact other young architects and artists to join his practice, which he set up in Los Angeles in the mideighties after receiving his B.A. in architecture from the University of Texas and working for various firms.

In international competitions, the adventuresome architect expects to overcome what he terms "the egocentric importation of generally Western ideas" to foreign places. "We intend to create site-sensitive architecture across cultural boundaries," he insists. Indeed, with the magnificent Alexandria library now being raised in Egypt, that is not hard to believe.
