The empress is in a good mood as we sit down to afternoon tea at the tony Shangri-La Hotel in Hong Kong. In a nubbly brown knit top and skin-tight Italian slacks, Gong Li looks casual chic and very svelte. Her alabaster skin glows luminously in the frame of her long black hair, and she moves with natural poise.
Today she is the most famous Chinese actress in world cinema, having been iconized in such Chinese films as Raise the Red Lantern and Farewell My Concubine. And though she may look every inch a star, she knows when not to act like one. She breaks the ice by striking a pose and saying in Chinese, "Look, do you think I've lost weight?"
She chuckles. "When it's time to go back to work, I get back in shape." She's referring to Chinese Box, her new film directed by ...

... true actress's delight. "Of course, I'm interested in doing Western films," she insists. "They have some fine actors and actresses, good budgets, but the roles they create for Asians are just too superficial, too unnatural. It's clear they don't understand Chinese character at all. That kind of thing isn't at all interesting to me."All in all, the empress is thrilled to return to her domain.
