In a part of the United States known around the world for cold weather, Nordic temperament, liberal arts funding, and former Vice Presidents Hubert Humphrey and Walter Mondale, a music and dance company featuring the classical arts of India has been mesmerizing audiences with innovative dance dramas for more than three years. Ragamala Music and Dance Theater, based in Minneapolis, takes its name from the Indian word raga (an ancient musical form that sets mood and emotion) and mala (meaning something beautiful, like a garland of flowers). Born of a commingling of traditional solo Indian art forms never before mixed, Ragamala Music and Dance Theater is the brainchild of two Minneapolis-based artists, each with one foot firmly planted in the East and the other in the West.
