A consummate experimenter and reinventor, designer Hella Jongerius finds her inspiration in industrial processes and by-products. "I love what I find on factory floors--the waste," she says. "I'm like, 'Is this trash?' It's pure gold for me." When the forty-year-old Dutch designer sets out to create a functional object, whether it's a new line of fabric for Maharam or a chandelier for Swarovski, she works from the outside in and explores what that object means, considering heritage and archetypes. Whatever Jongerius touches has a layered feel because history and technology, past and present, high and low, rub up against one another.
