Letter From Cumbria
"We boast our light; but if we look not wisely on the sun,
it smites us into darkness." --Milton
The sky has dropped. I guess you know.
White dust scatters on forest pine.
A brilliant sunlight scalds the snow.
Will there be loud arcades of time,
Flowers to erupt their wild grace,
Histories for us? You are mine.
I am yours. I know your face, ...
. . .
...the ghosts of children make that noise,
clattering among vines, running to the sea.
Listen to the voices: they are our children,
who dream of circuses every day,
an estuary alive with blue seiners,
factories on the widening river bend.
"I read, much of the night, and go south in the winter."
But that was another way. And revolution,
revolution, the Gulf of Spezia our bright fresh day.
