Because William Bennett is not running for president or for any other public office, he can do something the candidates can't: select which topics to deal with and which to avoid. In 1995, at least, Bennett's strategy was low-risk; the only sociocultural broadsides he issued concerned matters on which almost everyone already agreed with him.
