A new crop of German choreographers, who are bridging German dance traditions with postmodern sensibilities, has in recent years emerged in postunification Germany. One such choreographer is Sasha Waltz. While some might view German dance history (exemplified by Rudolph Laban, Kurt Joos, and Pina Bausch) as a challenge to live up to, Waltz is decidedly carving out her own path. Her works are both steeped in the German dance tradition of danztheater (dance theater) and invested with her own singular style.

Waltz's choreography is a blend of the American postmodern-dance aesthetic with a kind of twenty-first-century German Expressionism. Such a combination makes her a quintessential international artist. Add to this her decidedly multicultural company of dancers, hailing from Canada, Spain, Italy, Japan, and Germany, and this fact rings even more true. As one of the four recently instated artistic directors at Berlin's prestigious Schaub?ne am Lehniner Platz, Waltz seems poised for continuing international acclaim.

As an artist working in an ever-changing, evolving, and hopeful country, Waltz is a choreographer attuned to the pulse of Germany's cultural mood. It will be interesting to see the shape of her future works of danztheater.
