To Tell You the Truth

I guess I'm faking anguish
to get this essay in metaphor,
a grand way of saying thank you
When all that's needed is a wave
and a baked, absolute light
like the hills around Barcelona,
the ground thick with pine-cones,

...s though somebody's hand
had painted them on the meadow,
munching at grass,
crushing the soft buttercups.
That buttercup meadow
Is all you remember,
not the last red squirrel,
leaping out of elms
like a clown
throwing dust in our eyes,
cartwheeling
over cows as if they were questions
left out to be answered,
history books where all the talk is of squirrels.
