A little over two hundred miles northeast of Helsinki, Finland, sits a glorious little town of thirty thousand called Savolinna. Located in the heart of the Saimaa lake district, with its green hills, spectacular ridges, and scores of islands, capes, and caves, Savolinna is a feast for the eyes. During the month of July, when the Savolinna Opera Festival is in full swing, it is also a feast for the ears.
The festival, one of Europe's oldest, was organized by the Finnish soprano Aino Ackte in 1912. Although within a few years the festival's reputation had spread throughout Europe, in 1930 the festival had to be abandoned when financial difficulties grew overwhelming. It was revived in the late 1960s and attained its present international stature in the 1970s, when the great Finnish bass Martti Talvela held the position of artistic director.
