The Toronto International Film Festival has been described by the New York Times as "the North American Cannes," and by the Los Angeles Times as "one of the biggest public festivals in the world." The 1999 festival (which ran September 10--18) received 1,585 international submissions. Its final program of 319 features and shorts came from 52 countries, and 171 international features made their world or North American premier. Not only does the festival attract a multitude of Hollywood stars and power brokers, what makes it unique among film fests is the strong support of more than 250,000 local and visiting filmgoers who flock to the festival year after year.
